Went to yoga despite some soreness in my troublesome hip. Took it easy on any groin & outer hip poses. Focused my work on shoulder opening and other such things, which is a good place for me right now.

We did get to work on handstand. There was a time when I swore I’d never be able to do a handstand. Now, I think there will be a time & its not so far in the future. Right now I can’t get myself up in a handstand on my own; with a little help from a friend I can get up & stay up for a few minutes. In practice tonight, I worked near the wall on my own. I got myself into a down dog like pose and walked my feet forward, flattening my back toward (but not touching) the wall. I engaged my core & worked on lifting (and kicking) weight out of my feet & into my hands. I’m very close. My arms & core are able to hold my weight. I think the “getting up” is now mostly about getting past the fear of “just doing it”.

I did get up in a nice long headstand & did a supported shoulderstand. I prefer to use my core rather than hands to hold myself in shoulderstand, but I realized I need to practice doing more with wrapping my shoulders under or I’m never going to do that pose well.

More things I realized are going to be problematic with the Certified Local  pledge starting on 8/1:

  • milk: I buy lactose free organic, which goes in my morning coffee. Its from Wisconsin!
  • everything in my pantry: I stock up on lentils, cartons of broth, tuna fish, canned tomatoes, flour, peanut butter and so forth & pull from it when needed. I don’t think any of it fits the bill. So, if it were purchased before 8/1, does it count against me?
  • road trip: I’m taking a road trip out of Seattle later in August. So, do I try to eat within 100 miles of where I am at any given moment? Do I try to take all my food with me (that’s not going to happen)? Am I defeating the 100 mile purpose by driving a car 100s of miles?
