Yes, I’m logging the road trip under my “other category” as 17 hours of sitting on my rear end. I didn’t even drive the car. I sat. I listened to The Nanny Diaries on I-Pod. I talked to the dog. I tuned the Rhapsody player & I-Pod now & again as we lost our signals. I looked at the scenery. I talked on the phone. Really, it was a fun drive down. It was blazing hot — 103 was the max we saw the car report. It was so hot, I wondered if I needed to have my car’s air conditioning serviced ’cause it almost felt as though the air coming out was hot. (I haven’t used it all summer in Seattle, so didn’t know for sure if it was working or not.)

We did hit a cooling rainstorm around Grant’s Pass. I’ve never seen raindrops as big. Seriously, it was like fists or water balloons of water hitting the windshield. Then we hit the valley below and the thermometer bounced back up to 100 from the cool 75 in the rain.

The nastiest part of the drive was when we hit road construction south of Redding California. I really think they should have diverted traffic off I-5 for this construction. Traffic was crawling along at about 5 mph, it was 100 F out, and we had to pass a fully gas-masked crew sweeping some kind of rubber cement-smelling filler into the road. I almost threw up. Poor Shiloh laid down in the back & we didn’t see her raise her head again for about an hour. I worried it had killed her. I was waiting for the CHP to pull us over for drug testing since the state had just gotten the entire driving community high. Ugh.

Still, we arrived in Sunnyvale around 1am. I soaked my feet in the cold swimming pool & crashed. Today I plan to get some swimming in & perhaps a lot of floating…just as soon as I can get my work done.

Oh, its kind of cool. Sunnyvale has free wifi throughout the city. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work very well. But, I was able to surf, very slowly, from the house. Today I sought out a wireless cafe where I can actually work at a functional pace.

Now to go find a floating device for the pool….:)
