Tonight’s flow yoga was excellent. Lots of flow. Lots of stretching. Lots of strength poses. But, by far, my favorites were the backbends…particularly camel. I was able, holding my hands on my hips, to bend backwards to the point that I basically just put my hands on my heels. So, most of the rotation to get backwards really came from my upper spine and heart center. The arms were just secodary and gave me leverage to push my thighs and hips forward.

Backbends are relaxing but incredibly energizing as well.  Every time I go to a practice with lots of backbends, I hear the teacher mention that they stimulate the endocrine system. Until tonight, I never bothered to look up what that means. I always knew they built alertness, but turns out they also stimulate the pancreas for carb metabolism and the immune system, which I need since I’ve been feeling over worked and run down lately (and everyone seems to be coming up sick these days). Here’s a link for more info on the benefits of backbends.

Tomorrow is a long work day with lots of garden coaching…probably in the rain. I hope my immune system is up to the challenge! :)
