Yesterday I decided to take advantage of the sunny, if cold, day. I was sick of looking out my diningroom picture window at the perennials that were “finished” for the season and the weeds that had been hiding under my deciduous trees, which had become quite visible with the autumn leaf drop. In three hours I got quite a bit done.
Often people hire me and say they had hired someone to prune their trees or clean up their garden, but they ask me if anything had really been done. Often my remark is, “the sign of a good pruner is that you really can’t tell that they’ve been there.” The reason for this is that most of what a good clean up job entails is often taking out dead material and barely doing any work to “shape” a plant. Anyway, I could go on & on about this, but what I”m getting at is Bob’s comment this morning on my work, “hmmm….its hard to tell what you did.”
Ironically, if you go out to our driveway and look, there are two huge, full yard waste bins filled with weeds, thinned bamboo, a few trimmings from shrubs and trees, and a bunch of leaves. (I do try to keep some leaves on the ground to protect roots in the winter.) Plus, I planted a section with winter annual flowering cabbage to “brighten” an area between my bamboo and my patio. Anyway, I guess in some ways his comment reflects what I hope is experienced by people who have pruning done. Then again, I know how big a mess I cleaned up, and I kind of wish it was more apparent. Then again, I can vacumn the whole house thinking its in desperate need, and he won’t even know the difference. Dirt is in the eye of the beholder, I guess.
