Left IT-band & Hamstring = yoga limiters
Posted by gardenmentor under Flexibility, Yoga
Digg! this story.
I almost didn’t make it to class. I was deeply focused on preparing a print advert. Then I glanced at the clock. It was just past the time I usually leave for yoga — and I still needed to change clothes. I hit “save”, swapped my outfit, and raced to the studio. I made it with a few minutes to relax before class started!
It was my “easy” class, of course. Last week I visited my acupuncturist to work on a limiting tight spot in my left leg. Its kind of hard to isolate exactly where the problem is — is it IT band? Is it hamstring? I think its all a little related. The acupuncture helped open it a bit, but since I was sick with a head/chest thing, I wasn’t in my best form to take in the acupuncture session fully. (I think I’ll go back for another soon.) When my acupuncturist worked on the area she described the muscle group in the “trigger” spot as flattened out and somewhat isolated — in a way that keeps it from proper blood flow, which means these groups aren’t being fed nutrients properly. Very interesting…
So, back to yoga practice…
We did a lot of basic work — 1/2 salutation warm ups, supported cobra backbends, warrior II and deep side angle practice. Then we got out straps and did some IT band + hamstring stretches, which I’d requested. Usually these feel amazing. They killed on my left leg yesterday. I still have some work to do on this area!
Today’s another day. My leg feels a bit better today. But, its still a little annoying. I’m looking forward to a walk with Shiloh and yoga later today.
