I just got back from shopping for some holiday dress clothes. I found a perfect “little black dress”. I sighed when I saw that it was tiny — alas, a size 6/small. My friend encouraged me to try it on anyway.
I tried it on. It fit? It fit! I’m a size 6? I guess so…
I haven’t been this small since…well, ever.
So, year forty is going out with at least one number, my dress size, going down. I hope I can keep it this way through the season of eating & drinking.
For those of you who are just now embarking on weight/size changes, do yourself a favor and take your measurements. I wish I had. I know my body has really changed from doing yoga consistently over the past few years, but I don’t have any baselines to compare to.
Here’s to smaller waistlines all ’round!

Congrats! That’s awesome!
I agree… keeping track of measurements is a great way to stay motivated with things like yoga and strength training… Particularly because these activities can trend toward not losing weight… but the certainly make you “leaner” and more fit.

Awsome! Congratulations.
What a great accomplishment. The little black dress is a demon for most.

Fantastic . . . and I know that feeling well, having bought my first pair of 32″ waist jeans this year since . . . oh, about 1994! I’m still the wrong shape for a little black dress. not that I’ve tried though

Wow! Good for you!!
Here’s to 2008!
I am getting measured tomorrow at the Bridal shop… ha ha. I plan on stealing the info for my personal use.

This is a great moment, and thanks for sharing!
I agree w/Brad as well, that taking measurements before embarking on a ‘lifestyle’ change can be a good thing. OTOH, we are measured to death, and one of the best indicators of positive change is exactly the one you’ve discussed: You need a new set of clothes because the ‘normal’ ones just don’t fit anymore!
Oh, and let’s not forget those comments at the Holiday Parties… “You look so great!”
Have fun at Nordy’s!

I took my measurements about a year ago…Haven’t checked since I began “seriously” working out. Thanks for the reminder! Congrats on the downsizing and enjoy the new clothes shopping.

Thanks for sharing in my happiness everyone!
On the measuring thing…its so true that “we’re measured to death” these days. Ironically, my size has gone down, my posture and strength have improved, my belly button seems higher on my mid-drift, I see a bit of rib under muscle rather than “back boobs”, but my weight (the only thing I’ve kept track of consistently) has quite possibly gone up along the way.
“Muscle weighs more than fat” is something I hear a lot, but that doesn’t make sense. One lb of anything weighs 1 lb. But, perhaps this concept derives from the fact that muscle is denser than fat, so it takes up less space than fat. I guess that’s my world. If I was willing to watch how much food I consume, I’d probably lose some weight, but I don’t know that that’s really necessary. I love food, and, for the most part, I eat pretty healthy stuff, and I eat when I’m hungry not just for the fun of it (like I did in the past). So, maybe I’ll start ignoring the scale and pay attention to the clothes metric going forward!

What the heck is a “back boob”?
I love the whole “muscle weighs more than fat” comment… you hear it all the time. But I think wrapped in it is basically the good advice you already seem to understand, which is, that your body is changing in more ways than just weight, and so do get hung up on that one metric.
Last year at the beginning of the year, I was doing strength training 3-5x per week. And the results were really amazing… My arms became so lean and the muscles were very toned. But… I didn’t lose weight… and I didn’t improve my Triathlete specific fitness… and since I needed to ramp up for my Ironman, those sessions faded… and the results have faded too.
I guess I mention this because, I agree with your last comment, which is that you need to pick a goal… and weight is usually a poor goal. But whatever you do, pick a goal and pick fitness activities that will help you get to that goal.

Back boobs = one a girl’s worst fashion nightmares.
Back boobs happen when a gal carries extra flab under the arms and around the back at “boob level”. They can just be there when a lady’s flabby. If she’s slouchy, it doesn’t help. They can show up when even a thin gal wears too tight a bra. Its the boob wrap-around effect, and its not pretty. Women with “apple” shapes tend to have this problem more than women with “pear” shapes. But any of us can wear the curse.
